Chapter 411 Medical Payment Coverage

Full-time police officers and firefighters in cities that participate in the disability retirement system created by Chapter 411 of the Code of Iowa are excluded from the provisions of the Workers’ Compensation Act under Chapter 85 of the Code. Since there is no provision in Chapter 411 for short-term disability or medical payment benefits, participating cities must assume these liabilities when work-related injuries occur to their officers and firefighters.

IMWCA offers a Chapter 411 Medical Payment Coverage Endorsement to help cities defray the medical costs. When this medical payment coverage applies, the Association will pay promptly when due, the hospital, nursing and medical benefits required of the Participant by Iowa Code Chapter 411.15, Hospitalization and medical attention. Payments made pursuant to this endorsement are not coordinated with workers’ compensation benefits.

Indemnity coverage will not be provided for police officers and firefighters who are members of a system established under Iowa Code Chapter 411.

All other terms and conditions of the Coverage Memorandum remain unchanged.
