Safety Grant and Innovation Award

The Safety Grant and Safety Innovation Award programs seek to to encourage innovative ideas for improving employees’ safety within the IMWCA membership and to share projects developed and implemented by members to reduce or eliminate significant safety exposures in the workplace. In addition, the program demonstrates that those involved with local government are progressive, caring and committed to their employees.

Each IMWCA member may submit only one application for either a Safety Grant or a Safety Innovation Award per application period. Safety Grant applications must describe programs or projects that will commence within FY 2019-20.

FY 2019- 2020 Award Timeline
  • July 1, 2019 – Begin accepting applications for Safety Grant and Safety Innovation Award.
  • May 30, 2020 – Closing applications. Note: Applications are evaluated as they are submitted with money awarded throughout the year. Funding is merit based and subject to availability.
  • October 2020– Grant and Award recipients recognized at the IMWCA One-Day Safety University.

​Safety Grant

The Safety Grant supports projects that can greatly reduce or eliminate injuries in the workplace. Emphasis will be placed on funding projects that are highly reproducible among the IMWCA membership. Some examples of projects include:
  • Develop and implement a pilot project for train-the-trainer program for stretching during work hours
  • evelop and implement a pilot project for a department to test use Grips footwear (law enforcement and public health)
  • Develop and implement an emergency medical technician train-the-trainer program for lifting 
  • Develop internal Post-traumatic stress disorder prevention training for public safety departments
  • Develop and implement tools or procedures to greatly reduce or eliminate back, shoulder and knee injuries in the workplace
IMWCA will not approve grants for general safety training contracts, weapons or standard safety equipment, such as general personal protective equipment, machine guards or equipment currently required by Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards.

A grant of up to $10,000 is available for IMWCA members in good standing, with a total of $90,000 available.  Safety Grant money may not be used to pay for general safety training or equipment purchased before the application is submitted.

Please submit only the application form completed as clearly and completely as possible. The application must include:
  1. An outline of the project that includes the problem to be addressed and the applicants approach to the solution. Measurable success factors are encouraged. IMWCA can assist with developing metrics.
  2. Number of employees that will participate in the project.
  3. A timeline for the project implementation and review of results.
  4. Other entities involved, if applicable.
  5. Amount of grant funding sought and how the funds will be spent. This also includes whether the request seeks full funding, reimbursement or cost sharing. 
Members receiving a grant agree to share results of their pilot projects that will include contributing project results in IMWCA materials. IMWCA may request more information to develop these materials.

Members receiving a grant must also provide receipts for expenditures made on the project in order to receive reimbursement. For fully-funded projects receipts must be provided for agreed upon costs with all receipts due before the end of the agreed upon project date.

Members receiving a grant will also need to submit a resolution from the governing body that supports the project before Safety Grant funds can be committed to a project.

Safety Innovation Award

The Safety Innovation Award will be presented to members that developed new processes, equipment or programs which improve workplace safety and are transferable to other members. Processes, equipment or programs under patent or with patent pending are not be eligible for consideration.
Up to 10 members will be given the Safety Innovation Award, which includes $1000.

Please submit the following with the application:
  1. An outline of the project that includes the problem to be addressed and the applicants approach to the solution. 
  2. Number of employees that will participate in the project.
  3. Other entities involved, if applicable.
  4. High-resolution photos or a video that demonstrates how the innovation functions and improves safety. 
Applications will only be eligible if it includes specifications of the tool or equipment design and an agreement to share the design with other interested members at no cost. Members receiving the Safety Innovation Award must also agree to be featured in IMWCA materials that highlights how the project enhances workplace safety for local governments. IMWCA may request more information to develop these materials.

Grant and Award Evaluation

Applications for both the Safety Grant and Safety Innovation Award will be evaluated as they are received. The process will evaluate impact or potential impact on the member’s safety efforts, including how many people it can affect and its longevity. The process will also consider cost-effectiveness, use of inter-government collaboration and innovation.

All applicants will be alerted by postal mail of their application’s status within 30 business days.

Entry Deadline

Applications are due in the IMWCA office by May 29, 2020. However, applications are evaluated as they are submitted, with money and awards presented throughout the year. In other words, submit your application early for the best chance at being recognized.

Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Applications must be submitted using the online form.
